The following is the text of a press release from Greenville’s Recreation District regarding their Historic Site Inventory, which was mentioned here earlier:
Historic Site Inventory
Greenville Rec has received a grant administered by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History to study, categorize, and record more than 1,200 historic sites in the unincorporated areas of Greenville County. Brockington & Associates, one of the largest cultural resource management consultants in the United States, has been retained to complete the inventory.
“Our county has unique historic treasures and oral histories to be shared, “said Greenville Rec’s Ty Houck. “The study will identify historic sites and other cultural properties. Using this information we will be able to preserve our community identity as we continue to grow as a county.”
Brockington & Associates will encourage public participation in the project through community meetings where they will outline the criteria of their work. Individuals who would like to submit potential historic sites for consideration may also email historicsites@gcrd.org. The inventory is expected to be completed by August 2013.
Greenville Rec currently owns several historic sites including Campbell’s Covered Bridge and manages the Poinsett Bridge Preserve. For more information visit www.greenvillerec.com or call Ty Houck at 288-6470 (141).
