William Whitner “Man on the Corner” Play
May 02, 2013 – 07:00 PM until 08:00 PM
“Man on the Corner” is an original play starring the sculpture of Mr. Whitner as he visits the city’s other statues and public art installations. The play was written for the City of Anderson by Kathryn Smith and stars Vic Aviles as William Church Whitner. William Church Whitner, of Anderson, developed the concept and spearheaded financing for the first hydroelectric plant to transmit power over a long distance in the South. On May 1, 1895, electricity travelled six miles from a generator at High Shoals on the Rocky River to downtown Anderson, S.C. The sculpture of him by noted artist Zan Wells was erected in 2004 and graces the city’s square. In the play, Mr. Whitner comes to life to tell us about his life and educate us about other historic and artistic sights in the City. The South Carolina Arts Commission recently named the City of Anderson a winner of the 2013 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts, the highest honor recognizing outstanding achievement.
