*Celebrating the Cowpens Battle – January 18, 19 & 20, 2013

After 232 years, we’re still celebrating the victory of patriots led by Gen. Daniel Morgan over British forces at the Battle of the Cow Pens in January 1781 that was an essential step in the defeat of the British and our establishment as a nation.  There are several things going on for this year’s anniversary celebration and you won’t want to miss them!

On Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm, a wreath will be laid at the Daniel Morgan Statue on the square in downtown Spartanburg.

Friday evening at 7 pm, the American Revolution Roundtable of the Backcountry will present Jim Piecuch in the Montgomery Room at Wofford College.  His topic is “Cavalry of the American Revolution: The evolution of the Continental Army’s cavalry arm and impact on the war.”  The cost is just $5 and includes dessert.  Reservations should be made with Juanita Pesaro (864-597-4207; pesarojb@wofford.edu).  Click here  for more details.

Saturday and Sunday are busy with Morgan’s Victory March and the annual reenactment at Cowpens National Battlefield.  This is the perfect way to put yourself in the position of Morgan’s “Flying Army” who were victorious at Cowpens.  Start off on Saturday, Jan. 19, mustering with Gen. Morgan to begin the march to the Cowpens.  You’ll arrive there on Sunday afternoon with an understanding of history that can’t be found any other way.  Click here  for the mustering locations, times, optional camping location, and contact information.  Of course, if marching isn’t your cup of tea, there’s still plenty to do at the Battlefield.  Follow this link – Events & Schedule - to see everything that’s happening on site for the weekend.

As if that weren’t enough, Dr. Melissa Walker’s latest publication The Battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens: The American Revolution in the Southern Backcountry is now available.  She’ll be at Cowpens Battlefield at noon on Saturday, Jan 19.  If you miss her there, plan to make it to Hub City Bookstore on Feb. 19 at 6 pm.  Of course, you can order your copy any time from the publisher’s website or at the bookstore.  Paperback: $27.95; Hardback: $130.00  Click here for more information.

Whew!  I’m tired and the celebration hasn’t even begun.  Have fun! Becky

Carolina and the Constitution Series: The Religion Clauses,  Nov. 28 at 5pm

Few issues are as debated as the relationship between Church and State. The validity of the Supreme Court’s first foray into this field was challenged by a landmark case arising from South Carolina, Sherbert v. Verner. Should the government excuse people from obeying laws that conflict with their religion? Or does the Establishment Clause restrict the government from doing so? Learn more about the history of this issue in this lecture series by Furman President Rod Smolla.
