UHM – Ansel Adams Exhibit

The focus is on renowned photographer Ansel Adams in “Ansel Adams: Distance and Detail,” the newest exhibit opening at the Upcountry History Museum-Furman University, a Smithsonian Affiliate, on Saturday, February 18, 2017, and running through June 4, 2017.

The 30 photographs featured in this exhibit highlight images synonymous with the environmental backdrops that have made Adams famous, such as lakes, dunes, storms, surf crashing on rocks, sunrises and sunsets. From the iconic Moonrise over Hernandez to lesser-known studies of architectural subjects such as the Spanish Catholic Missions in Arizona, visitors will have the opportunity to observe Adams’ careful attention to clarity and detail across an array of subject matter.

Made between 1931 and 1976, these photographs provide an in-depth look at the work of one of America’s best known Modernists and folk heroes. This exhibition presents both Adams’ elemental, personal interpretation of what is close enough to touch and smell as well as allowances of a deeper understanding of his complete vision of the natural world.

Considered one of America’s best technical masters of photography, Adams is also recognized as an environmentalist, writer and lecturer. Known primarily for his iconic black and white images of the American West, in particular Yosemite National Park, Adams used his love of nature and photography to not only promote conservation, but to help establish photography among the fine arts.

Adams said, “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, (and) the people you have loved.” The distinctive photographs used to create this traveling exhibit help transport visitors to a place where all of these senses can be experienced in one viewing.

The Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St., in Greenville, S.C. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.upcountryhistory.org. or call 864-467- 3100.
